The Free Foresters fixture on 5th July was cancelled by the weather – a huge pity as it is such an important fixture. Two days later, at Chilmark, the match was reduced to a 10 overs a side game as the match organisers tried to fit a some play in between heavy rain showers. The Queries contained Chilmark’s innings to 61 for 7 and then scored 66 for the loss of 3 wickets. Two batters retired at 25 not out.
After a sumptuous tea, a second round of 10 overs was attempted only for another band of heavy rain to intervene after just 3 overs had been bowled and the Queries had scored 36. That was the end of play for the day.
The Queries – perhaps fortified by the gargantuan tea – remained quite chipper throughout the disappointment of a shortened afternoon’s cricket. We look forward to seeing new candidates Tom Beard and Jonty Mitchell again before long, and Tom Whiting and Seb Woodford again before the end of the season.
