Despite all sorts of Covid and other challenges, James Williams still managed to assemble a strong XI at Dauntsey’s School to play the Headley Old Freemen’s XI. HOF inserted the Queries on a track that was not going to be easy to master.
It was a 50 over match. Our first 10 overs yielded only 39 runs and 3 wickets and from then on we went at roughly 35 runs every 10 overs bar the last 10 overs when we scored freely. Wickets fell quickly in the 3rd batch of 10 overs and in the final 10 we lost 2. Jack Grant got off to a quick start with 25 before he was caught. Simon Grant and Josh Kelly were both caught cheaply, and Usman Akram faced 50 balls for his 15 runs before he too was caught. It was left to the Marshfield pair of Henry (74) and Hamish Walker (31) to pile the runs on, and we finished our 50 overs at 221 for 9. Notice the score card below – 8 of our batsmen were out to catches.
Our bowling reply was strong – too strong really. Skipper James Williams used 8 bowlers and none went for more than 21 runs. Usman A took 3/21; Sean Montgomery 2/8; Sam Duckett 2/15; and Hamish Walker (1/8), James Wade (1/6) and Josh Kelly (1/3) all took one apiece. Our bowlers will be very happy with their analysis as only 3 HOF batsmen made it to double figures and they were backed up by excellent wicket keeping by Calum Burnstone. HOF were all out for 84 runs 15 overs inside the distance.
