We first played Winterbourne in 1932 and we managed to win then! Ever since there have been contests of sometimes epic proportions – and today was no exception.
Queries fielded 3 sets of fathers and sons – Campbells, Coupes and Leakey’s – and were set to field first. It was James Gaunt who got us to a winning position, after a powerful opening stand, when he took 5 for 26. Jon Moore surprised himself with a further 3 wickets for 22 and George Leakey took one. Winterbourne totalled 198 in their 35 overs and given the strength and depth of their Judd family dynasty bowling, probably felt quite confident.
The Queries initial reply was OK but not outstanding: George Leakey scored 26 before holing out: Nick Jephson became the anchor and got a half century and retired: James Gaunt holed out for 9 – and we were a bit behind the curve. Alastair Coupe’s 14 helped but it was slow and we were running out of overs: Omars’ 32 was great but the maidens at the 31st and 32nd overs worried the crowd: and it was Jon Moore who, after a tentative start began to find the boundary repetitively winning the day with a big 6 over the road with 3 balls to spare. Queries ended on 200 for 5 and won the game by 5 wickets. Great fun, great hospitality from Winterbourne and a very enjoyable last match of the season.
