A Big Win at Potterne CC in a High-Scoring Match

Jack Bramwell was skippering a powerhouse of batsmen today at Potterne, and they did him proud. Batting first there were 85 runs on the board before opener George Elliott was out caught for 44, followed by a stand of 166 before Ollie Whitely was out bowled by Elliott Gaiger for 100. Queries were 251 for 2 and motoring. Ed Wade was Potterne’s next victim as he [deliberately] walked past a ball from Ben Higton and was stumped for 104. We now had 2 centurions and were 281 for 3. James Higton was out caught for 48, another wicket for E Gaiger, and we were 389 for 4 however a 16 minute 18 ball 77 from Jack Goodwin, plus just 7 from Dan Pirie, ensured that the 400 mark was passed and at the end of our 40 overs we had scored 404.
Yes it is a small ground, but the ball still has to be hit, and Queries did that in spades with 36 fours and 26 sixes being struck!
In the Potterne reply, debutant Conor Grant opened from the pavilion end and James Wade came down the hill. In his third over Conor tempted opener Will Pembroke to drive at a wide one, and he was caught at slip by Dan Pirie. 26 for 1. Vinnie Perera was camped at the other end and hitting sixes for fun, but three wickets in one over from James Wade removed Vinny’s middle-order partners in quick time. 72 for 2, 3 and 4.  Vinny went on to score a well-crafted and almost faultless112 before retiring. Ben Higton and Potterne skipper Josh Hodder tried hard to move the scoreboard along until both were caught, Ben for 54 and Josh for 67. After that it was a fairly simple matter to clean up the tail and Potterne were all out for 314.  Queries had won by 90 runs, in a 76.3 over match that saw 718 runs being scored !
Conor Grant is an exciting new find [8-0-62-1] and we hope to see lots more of him. James Wade bowled a phenomenal 5 overs taking 3 for 13. Jack Goodwin’s leg spin brought lots of rewards with his 2.3 overs, 3 for 12. Ed Wade bowled 4 overs taking 2 for 31, and skipper Jack Bramwell, Dom Spencer and Dan Pirie bowled the other 17 overs for 168 runs.
We welcomed James Melhorn back into a Queries side having not seen him for a long time; we were very grateful to Nigel Hill for doing the scoring: and we hope that we might entice Ed Wade, Jack Goodwin, Conor Grant and James Higton to join the club.
