Queries Enjoy a Comfortable Win at Dauntsey’s School

Playing a 40 over game on a track that was sometimes difficult to ‘read’, Queries were inserted and found the going quite hard. Early wickets fell, we were 3 down after 11 and it took till the 24th over to break 100. Thanks to a 50 from Nick Jephson, 26 from Dan Pirie, 19 from Tom Grant, and 18 from Simon Campbell we struggled to 175 for 9 in our 40 overs. But take note – 8 wickets fell to catches !

The key to controlling the School innings would be good bowling, and that is what we gave them. Tom Grant’s 5 overs, 4 maidens for 1 run was exemplary and at the other end Ben McGowan’s 5 overs, 1 maiden taking 1 for 17 meant that the School had a lot of work to do. A significant factor was that the Queries bowled 50 dot balls in their first 10 overs. Then the spin of James Brewer came on and spin is the undoing of the Dauntsey’s XI. James bowled 8 overs and took 5 for 26 and this, followed by Jack Butler’s 5 overs, 2 maidens, 2 for 7 meant we were absolutely in the box seat. The School were all out for 117 in the 36th over. And make another note – 8 School wickets also fell to catches!

It was an enjoyable afternoon’s cricket and not a one-sided affair, played in bright sunshine and in good spirit. After the match Query skipper praised the School’s fielding and bowling and nominated their wicket keeper Fraser Hyslop as the man of the match, presenting him with the John Sayer Memorial Match trophy.

Courtesy of Charlie Brewer, we have lots of photos of the game and our thanks go to him, and to Dauntsey’s for a wonderful after-match bbq and drinks.

The score card is here [table id=13 /]

a 5-fer for James Brewer
a half century for Nick Jephson
