It was a chastening day for the Queries at Larkhill, slipping to a 200+ run defeat against a strong Royal Artillery side.
The hosts opted to bat and got off to a flying start – so there was much relief when Dave Bromley’s swing bowling removed Graham Wiseman in the eighth over. That was slightly tempered by the fact that Wiseman already had a half century to his name.
The Artillery top order continued to tear in to the Queries attack. Jack Butler provided some much needed control, helping reduce the Artillery to 180-5. It was then that Nick Schofield arrived at the crease to play the innings of the day, respecting the decent deliveries and flaying anything wide. Despite two good spells from Usman Akram, Schofield proceeded to an unruffled ton as the Artillery finished their 50 overs on 347-8. Delivering his ten overs for under 40 among the carnage, and taking three wickets, Jack Butler was comfortably the pick of the attack.
The Queries’ response started in chaotic fashion, and largely deteriorated. Usman was run out seeking an impossible single, before Wiseman exacted his revenge on his Potterne colleagues. Simon Campbell’s 44 added a veneer of respectability but the Queries were bowled out for 131, inside 35 overs. Performance of the day came from new scorer Lin Church, whose assistance was much appreciated.
