A Drawn Match at Hinton

We managed a draw at Hinton Charterhouse today. Gloriously hot day, too hot for some, a lightening outfield, short leg side boundary and a declaration game in prospect. We batted first and reached 110 before the first wicket fell. It was Peter Mountstephen for 41. Then Jack Grant retired when he reached his half century, Adam Batisson likewise, guest Fin Fielder contributed a useful 32 and Hugh Norman 21* and skipper Simon Campbell declared at 239 for 4 (with two retirals) after 38 overs.

There then followed a sumptuous tea for which Katie Borton was entirely responsible, and back we went into the field.

HCCC has an overseas called Humphrey van der Merwe who scores big runs for fun, but a leading edge off his third ball from Simon Campbell saw him on his way. A big blow to HCCC. Tight bowling thereafter throttled the scoring so Simon C felt obliged to pass the ball to his second and third change bowlers – and so the runs progressed but the result was never really in doubt. At the start of the closing 20 overs HCCC needed 130 runs but were only 1 down. 2 stumpings, a run out, one retiral and a good catch later and it was all done and dusted. HCCC closed on 192 for 5 and the match was drawn.

Simon Campbell 3-2-11-1: Jack Grant 7-3-15-1: Sumith Surendran 5-0-25-1 and Hugh Norman 5-0-36-1 did the damage and Dom Spencer and Fin Fielder also bowled well.

Well played the younger players, on both sides. Many thanks to HCCC for hosting us and for a wonderful tea. Many thanks to Jakki Knight for scoring.

Queries always enjoy playing at HCCC and today was no exception. Thank you to them, their players and our Queries players for making it such an enjoyable game.
