An Historic Match against the Wiltshire u19s XI

Today we played an historic match against the Wiltshire u19s XI, at Marlborough College. Both XIs included a lot of talent, there was a Breast Cancer fund raising event riding on the back of it, there was a goodish crowd there to watch, and it was a hot day. Queries won the toss and inserted the u19s who got away to a very good start, getting to 100 before their first wicket fell, with batters 1 to 3 all scoring well. Once they were dismissed, all caught, the run rate slowed, runs were harder to come by, and eventually they were all out for 240 in the 46th over. Conor Grant (3 for 46 in 9), Bobby Britto (2 for 26 in 5), and Tom Grant (2 for 52 in 9) did lots of the damage, with Dashawn Prince, James Brewer and Rory Lyttle taking one apiece.

Skipper Tom Grant had said confidently at the start of the match, “whatever they score, we will beat” and there were moments when this confidence looked misplaced as we rolled from 30/1 to 39/2: then 6 wickets fell between 99 runs and 154. However when Conor Grant and Dashawn Prince piled on 61 runs until Conor was caught for 37 and the score on 215, spirits were rising fast, and it was left to James Brewer to hold the fort with Dashawn. We reached the target with Dashawn’s 33 and James’ 8 and still had 3 overs in hand! A win by 0ne wicket!

Well done to everyone for a very good game, to Tom Grant for skippering so well, to Ged Montgomery and his helpers for organising a great bbq and bar plus the raffle, and of course to Marlborough College for letting the match be staged on the wonderful 1st XI ground.
