The Final Result is a Win

While we are waiting for the match report to materialise, here are a few photos from the Frogs match which we won by 66 runs, thanks mainly to a fine 70 runs scored by George Elliott and a super 86 runs scored by Edd Sutthery. We declared on 247 for 5 and then bowled out The Frogs for 181, with Moses Onyuro and Ollie Illingworth taking 3 wickets apiece, and 8 wickets falling to catches.

It was great to see our President David Haywood there watching, as well as Peter Salisbury, Howard Moore, Brian Thompson and Geoff Ramsey.

Here is the match report: The Queries’ season finale ended in a 66 run victory at Tidworth against The Frogs. Our guests won the toss for a third year in a row and elected to change things up and invited the Queries to bat. Openers James Illingworth and James Roué both played some fine strokes but the weekend rain had influenced the new ball conditions and both were dismissed within the first hour. A third wicket stand of 130 between George Elliot (70 from 105) and Edd Sutthery (86* from 67) either side of lunch and a run-a-ball 28 from Tom Shaw allowed the Queries to declare at 247/5 in just 44 overs.

Murmurs of an overly generous declaration were quickly dispelled when Moses Onyuro struck with the first ball of the Frog’s innings, and with both Moses and Ollie Illingworth finding at times excessive (and unexpected) movement with the new ball The Frogs reached tea at 46/3. Haunted by previous encounters with Ninian MacGregor, 2 more Frogs batsmen added to his legend in the middle overs and timely wickets continued to fall in the overs before the last hour, shared amongst the spin department of Sumith Surendran, Jeff Haywood and of course Ninian. There were further bowling efforts to come with Josh Kelly and George Elliot both bowling nicely as the Queries hunted wickets in the final 20 overs. However despite some nice batting it seemed the total was no longer in the minds of the batters and captain Shaw employed some inventive fields to try to get his team over the line.

It was however ultimately the brilliance of Moses and Nick Jephson behind the stumps who combined to finish the job; the 9th wicket fell to a fine take from an inside edge, a catch we didn’t think would be topped that day. However the winning catch went one better, with Nick grasping a thick outside edge one-handed and low down to his right and the Queries won with 3 overs to spare.

A fitting end to the season and a wonderful all-round display of Queries cricket, Moses and Ollie Illingworth finishing with 3 wickets apiece in front of a host of past Presidents, Treasurers and Secretaries Great fun had by all, thanks to those who played, arranged, managed, and of course to The Frogs as well.
