The first defeat of the Season, at Marlborough College

On paper, David Bromley had assembled a strong XI and so it seemed when the College who won the toss and elected to bat first, was 5 down for 113 at lunch. After lunch however, Queries perhaps took their foot off the pedal and allowed their tail to wag, and it wagged effectively. Only by bringing back his best bowlers did David  regain the upper hand and close the innings at 227 all out. James Wade had taken 5 for 31 in 12 overs, with 3 maidens, and Jack Butler had taken 2 for 27 from 5.4 overs. James Brewer, Jack Grant and Theo Bossom all took one apiece. Five of the College wickets were catches.
The Queries reply started badly as both David Bromley and Jack Bramwell were out cheaply, one caught and one bowled. Josh Kelly and George Elliott were the two who made a fist of it and put on a hundred runs before George was out for 39, and then the tail collapsed in the failing light and we were all out for 173 losing the match by 53 runs.
It was very good to be back playing at the College after so many years without a fixture, and we hope very much that we can establish this all-day fixture as a regular event.
